Lavender potpourri is a beautiful way to fragrance your home and it can be completely natural too!
The simplest potpourri is just a few dried lavender grains placed in a bowl similar to the picture above. For the strongest fragrance use fragrant dried lavender, but if you’d like a milder fragrance try the blue dried lavender we use for wedding confetti.
If you’d like to decorate the potpourri, you could cut tiny sprigs of lavender a few centimetres long to put on top. Make them into tiny dried lavender posies if you wish. Here’s a pic of me tying little bundles of lavender stems with florist tape a few years ago, but of course ribbon would be more decorative. Items you add to the top of potpourri are often referred to as “toppers”.
For a natural fragrance boost, just add lavender essential oil! This will result in a completely natural potpourri with relaxing properties suitable for the bedroom for sleep. You could also use it in the office to reduce stress. The downside is that essential oils can evaporate reasonably quickly so you may need to top up from time to time.
For a longer lasting fragrance or a more unusual scent try adding home fragrance oil.
Lavender combines well with citrus fruits such as lime or lemon. These give a fresh clean scent which is perfect for the bathroom when mixed with lavender. You can find a lavender lime potpourri recipe on our blog at driedflowercraft.co.uk.
Other fragrance combinations include rose for a traditional floral scent suitable for the lounge. Or vanilla adds a warm welcoming character.
You can see that there’s a lavender fragrance combination for every room in the house!
